While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.
Great location right in the street of the Tsukiji temple with lots of charming shops, coffee shops and a great apple pie shop (Beni beni) all within 50 meters. The ryokan is great value and an absolute recommendation for some one who want to try an authentic Japanese hotel experience. Dinner was delicious and opulent. Good wifi and relatively comfortable futon. The common bath was very relaxing (I had it all to myself). Staff spoke Japanese only but were very friendly and the language did not create any issues to me.
The Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan was very traditional and a great experience of old Japanese ways. The owners were extremely hospitable and breakfast was outstanding. Traditional Japanese breakfast. It was within 100m of the Temple and 26 min walk to or from the station. Busses to the station are easily accessible (10mins down the hill)just outside the Temple grounds. A very unique experience for my son and I.
Great location. Its a 5 min walk away from Nagano station. It was good for taking a quick trip to Zenkoji Temple in the morning, which is 16 mins away by bus.
Hotel room was on the small end for a double room, but we didn't mind. The staff was very polite and helpful when helping international tourists check in. The free breakfast was tasty and filling. Check out was very fast.
Perfect ryokan in remote Japan. The experience was beyond expectations. The shrines in the area are superb! Everything was perfect and the hostess was very helpful. The food is amazing (but there's too much!)! The ryokan can be easily access by car from Nagano. It is a 35min scenic drive. I suggest nissan-rent-a-car right next to the train station. Everything went smoothly.
This hotel is perfectly situated close to the station and near eateries. We got in late with heavy bags so it was a relief to only have to walk a couple of minutes from the station to the hotel.
Breakfast is generous with breads and fruit and yogurt as well as a full Japanese selection of rice and noodles, fish, sausage and bacon.
The hotel is very well located in the centre of Nagano city, 3 minutes from the main station and close access to most of the location to visit. The staff is nice and polite, and the hotel itself is quite clean. Even if the room is a little small, it's practical, clean for an affordable price. The bed were quite comfortable.
Good Japanese breakfast that we were happy to pay for. Little but clean room walking distance from the main train station. Quiet, clean place. We were all energized the next day and walked to the Zenkoji Temple which was the highlight of our one day visit before the start of our Nakasendo Trail walk
The location was great. It was across the street from the train station, where you can also catch the bus to Snow Monkey Park. Reception is on the 4th floor. Shampoo and shower gel were provided in the room. There was a water dispenser on my floor. Nice view from my window.
The staff were super helpful and friendly and the hotel was extremely close to the train station where you could access everything you needed. The beds were very comfortable and had a decent sized bathroom with a bath that was great after being in the snow all day.
The rooms were a good size for Japan😊so neat and pleasant.
Liked that the hotel is well located among all the eateries and retailers as well as the train station! Makes moving around so effortless. And plenty of places to grab whatever kind of food you fancy🤗
Location is great, in the middle of everything. It was easy to reach the hotel from the train station and there were many restaurants around it. Breakfast was really nice, food was deliucious and nice views, as it is served at the 16th flloor restaurant.
Hotel room was huge compared to other rooms in japan. We were put on the 14th floor with beautiful views of the city and mountains. Staff was wonderful, and the restaurant had above average wood fire pizza. About a 15 minute walk to nagano station.
Best hotel room I had in Japan. Very well designed. Clean with good amenities and location is perfect, one minute walk from the train station. Donki is next door for all your shopping needs. Good breakfast. Short bus drive to Zenkoji.
A short walk away from the train station and the temple. Staff were super welcoming and eager to suggest restaurants, attractions, and tips for travelling around Nagano and the nearby attractions.
Staff was very friendly and gave us a free room upgrade. There was a pillow menu and a massage chair in our room. Also, bath salts were provided. Hotel was very near the train station too.
Very convenient with many places to eat nearby. The hotel is clean with easy access to transportation, whether its the train, bus or taxi. Hotel has direct access to train station.
Perfect location at JR Nagano station and link to mall. Breakfast spread was fantastic with both Japanese and Western selections. Rooms were small but expected.
The location is superb; close to Nagano station and in front of the main entertaining area of the city. Easy to understand system and convenient service.
